Setting Up Android Studio

Hello guys! Holidays are over and it's time to go back to normal (and lose some weight). I want to start this year with a personal project I've been procrastinating for a while now... A 2D RPG for mobile, specially Android devices, with a lot of focus on story and decisions.

When it's ready (aka, playable with some story, not a 5 minute repetitive game), I'll make it available on the Play Store so you guys can check it out. In the meantime, I'll be sharing the process of creating such a game. In a way, we'll work on it together.

As usual, questions, comments and suggestions are welcome as the project grows.

Anyway, this is how we got to this post, setting up Android Studio, Google's IDE for developing Android Apps, free to use and absolutely recommended for everyone who wants to develop for the most used mobile OS.

Now, Google provides us with a nice guide to set up their IDE so I'm not really going to copy paste their guide, I'll just provide you guys with the links to download and the installation guide.

Basically, you only need to follow the instructions for Installing Android Studio and Adding SDK Packages to be ready for developing your own apps, and for what we'll be doing for our game. Feel free to check out their other guides for building apps and such, if you'd like to get familiar with the language and the IDE, before we get started on our project.

On a side note, when choosing the lowest Android API to support, we'll stick to API level 8 as recommended by Google unless there's a feature we need to use during the development of the game that requires a higher API. If it happens, I'll make sure to give everyone a warning about it and update this accordingly.

GL;HF with Android Studio, I'll see everyone soon for Part 1 - The Game Idea, where we'll be discussing the fundamentals of our game! Take care and please remember, sharing is caring!

Edit: Part 1 is available now! Check it out!
